Langland - a Sept of Clan Scott

Dr George F Black's "Surnames of Scotland" says that the old family of Langlands of that Ilk derived their name from a small property of the name in Peeblesshire. The family were also lords of half the barony of Wilton in Roxburghshire Now an area in Hawick), and sometimes took their designation from that property. The family ended in heirs female with the death at Hawick in 1814 of Miss Langlands, who was buried in Wilton Church, Hawick (picture here © "Liz 'n' Jim" via Wikimedia Commons. )

Early records of the name include Marion Cumyne, widow of Johannes de Langland, had a charter of the lands of Milsallystoun and  Orhtirheuyd in 1364 Charles Langlandis was vicar of Dryvisdall, 1531, and Jamie Langland was tenant on the Abbey lands of Kelso, 1567. James Langlands was called to account in 1576 as surety for Will Robson and decreed to pay 20 marks on behalf of the latter. Gawan Langlandis appers in the Register of Cupar Abbey c. 1550, and John Langlandis is recorded in Dunfermline, 1561.

George Langlands of Campbelltown, Argyll was the surveyor to the Duke of Argyll and laid out road and towns in the Duke's bailliewick over many years.

Langlands have  a coat of arms (see graphic) and their own crest of "an anchor in pale placed in the sea proper" and their motto is "Spero" - I hope.
